Vocal Solos

Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. (Plato, Greek philosopher)

If you
include either of the alternative special elements in your ceremony, such as Presentation of Flowers to Mary or a Unity Candle, these symbols should be accompanied by an instrumental or vocal solo. And if your ceremony is being celebrated during Mass, you can have either a hymn or vocal solo during the Preparation of Gifts and during Communion.

Have you considered using an additional singer? Steven Vaughan, the Director of Music Ministry, will be happy to make arrangements for you with a professional musician. Or, if you have a qualified family member or friend that you would like to have share their musical talent, please inquire about that.

Of course, the suggestions on this page aren't a definitive list, so if some other song has special meaning to you, please request it, though if it’s not appropriate liturgically, consider having it played at the reception or as an instrumental prelude or postlude.

Title: Bridal Prayer
Composer: R. Copeland

Notes: Can be used anytime except Communion. With meaningful lyrics, and short in length, it's become one of the most requested solos for weddings.

"Here in this holy place, as we stand before the Father, and stand before the Son;
Here in this quiet hour, in the presence of the Spirit, our lives become as one
To listen when He calls us, and follow where He leads;
To be the kind of servants He needs-
Here in these sacred vows, we pledge our lives together, To love and serve in Jesus' name, Amen."

Title: Ave Maria
Composer: Bach / Gounod

Notes: Only for use during the Presentation of Flowers to Mary, at the Preparation of the Gifts if you're having a Mass, or as a Prelude. One of the most popular songs to honor Mary, our heavenly mother. Read more about the Bach / Gounod version here, though you need to decide if you want this one or the Schubert. It's sung in Latin, but the
translation is the prayer...

"Hail Mary, full of grace. Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

May this bright flame, O Lord, a testimony be
Of loving hearts united with tender trust in thee
O may thy glowing grace, dear Lord of light, we pray,
Shine down upon thy children, on this their wedding day.
Amen, Amen.
Title: The Unity Candle Song
Composer / Text: R. H. Haan / J. B. Sullivan

Notes: Perfect if you're lighting a unity candle, since it's only a minute long. Sorry there's no recording to hear, but it sounds traditional, and the entire text is here.

Title: We Come To Your Feast
Composer: M. Joncas

Notes: Only for use during the Preparation of Gifts if you're having a Mass.
Accompanied on piano. Explains the meaning of this part of the liturgy, so nice if you have a lot of guests unfamiliar with the Catholic Mass. We also use it for the Sacrament of First Eucharist, called First Communion by some people.

"We place upon Your table a gleaming cloth of white
The weaving of our stories, the fabric of our lives,
The dreams of those before us, the ancient hopeful cries,
The promise of our future, our needing and our nurture Lie here before our lives..."

Title: Panis Angelicus
Composer: C. Franck

Notes: Only for use during Communion if you are having a Mass. Latin for "Bread of Angels" or "Angelic Bread", it's the penultimate line of the hymn Sacris solemniis written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi.

"May the Bread of Angels Become bread for mankind;
May the Bread of Heaven put To all foreshadowings the end;
Oh, thing miraculous!
This body of God will nourish the poor, the servile, and the humble..."
