Vigil Mass with Orchestra and Choir!

posted Apr 30, 2011, 8:26 AM by Steven Vaughan

Did you know that of all the music ever written for the Catholic Mass, a very large proportion of it was with orchestral accompaniment?  Or that many European cathedrals are permanently endowed with orchestras?  But you don’t have to travel far to enjoy Mass this way, as St. Francis Preparatory High School Chamber Orchestra & Choir will play 5:00 Mass here at Immaculate Heart of Mary next week!

St. Francis “Prep” goes back 152 years to a simple building on Baltic Street.  Though it has since relocated to its present location in Fresh Meadows, the Franciscan traditions of peace, love and respect for the individual and community create an environment filled with academic success, integrity and joy.

In 1997 there were only fifteen students registered in a music course.  Now there’s a String Orchestra, Honors Orchestra, Percussion/Band Ensemble, Concert Band and Concert Chorus.  The music department also features theory and music history courses, offering students an opportunity to broaden their cultural background and to prepare for college.

The two most advanced ensembles are the Chamber Choir & Orchestra.  The Chamber Choir performs a variety of traditional choral music, ranging from medieval chants to contemporary jazz.  The Chamber Orchestra performs up to 20 times a year at both school and outside events, and was heard by millions of television viewers when it performed for His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI at the Formal Diplomatic Departure Ceremony at JFK International Airport in 2008.  Last summer, both of these ensembles toured London, and are preparing to tour Italy with music and song this spring.

Come hear these talented musicians play at the 5:00 vigil Mass next Saturday, May 7.  And for info on other musicians that have performed here, visit our Guest Artists page!
