I Sing the Mighty Power of God
, with text by Isaac Watts, was originally included in his 1715 hymnal Divine and Moral Songs for Children. It’s been coupled with the hymn tune ELLACOMBE for over two centuries. This tune, named for a village in Devonshire, England, was first published in 1784 as Ave Maria klärer in a German hymnal. So it’s appropriate that our kids here at Immaculate Heart of Mary will sing a text originally written for children to a tune originally written as a Marian hymn as the theme song of this summer’s Vacation Bible School, Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power!

We’ll start our climb up Everest with some other uplifting and energizing songs as well. Some you already know, such as Holy God, We Praise Thy Name and a setting of Psalm 23, The King of Love My Shepherd Is. But we’ll also learn new ones such as You’re Powerful and Be My Friend, and dance to the Power Shuffle!

And while VBS is advertised as “Totally Catholic”, be aware that musically, here it's also TOTALLY LIVE! Last year, our kids had a ball and didn't miss a beat as they sang and danced accompanied by a live band of drums, keyboard and guitars! But the enthusiasm we share at VBS needs to be continued into our Sunday liturgies, so your challenge is to set an example for our young friends each Sunday at Mass. Sing WITH a mighty power to God!

Register now for Everest, which happens July 6th – 10th and July 13th – 17th. For more information, email S. Mary Ann at ihmsma@ihmbrooklyn.org.
