Proclaim Good News!

This was the theme of the 37th Annual Convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians Fr. Robert and I attended last week in St. Louis.

We got to attend showcases by all of the major music publishing houses, including OCP, which prints our Breaking Bread. We spent time with Curtis Stephan, Steve Angrisano and Dan Schutte, who presented the Age to Age: Generations of Faith concert last September. We also met story-teller/singer ValLimar Jansen, who’s presenting our Confirmation Retreat and Parish Mission coming up in October. And we gathered with friends and colleagues one night for Taizé Prayer, to pray in song, silence, and the Word of God.

We attended workshops each day; I went to some specifically for organists called Organ Repertoire Based on Chant and Effective Practice Techniques.

I went to an “Industry Lab” on chant presented by Fr. Columba Kelly, osb, a Benedictine monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, on how to help our congregation chant simple refrains more effectively. Another I attended was What Every Cantor Needs to Know about Chanting the Psalms.

I went to others such as Selecting Repertoire for the Liturgy; Sight-Singing a New Song! and Music for Funerals. But my favorite was Singing FUNdamentals for Children’s Choirs – Enabling ALL TO SING. We explored the use of visual aids, such as toys, to empower EVERY child the ability to sing musically. And if EVERY child learns to sing musically, won’t we have given them an important tool to proclaim good news?
