"Let's Have a Parade!"

The 87th Anniversary Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade returns to kick-off the holidays! I’ve been participating as one of the parade’s 8,000 volunteers that makes the famous 2½ mile march through the streets of Manhattan for fifteen years. This year I’ll be “piloting” Charlie, the blue elf in the trio of elves right in front of Santa Claus!

But don't worry if you forget to set your DVR before you come to Mass that morning, I'm not until the end! (The parade airs on NBC from 9AM to Noon. A live stream will be available to watch the parade online.)

The newest Snoopy balloon will appear, marking another record-setting stint as the classic comic character soars in his 37th parade, cementing his long-standing record for most appearances and most balloon versions! A mythical dragon will be spotted in the skies as Toothless, the star of Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon joins the parade! And the parade will honor the 75th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz with a 47-foot hot air balloon!

There will be musical performances by the Goo Goo Dolls; Kristen Chenoweth; Joan Jett; Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings; and Gavin DeGraw. Also performing are the Radio City Rockettes and Broadway musicals Matilda and Motown. The Big Apple Circus, Sesame Street and Cirque du Soleil will also get into the act!

More information on the parade is available at www.macys.com/parade; via the Parade Hotline at (212) 494-4495; or you can download the Macy's Parade app for iOS or Android devices.

And to further anticipate the holiday season, on the morning of Saturday, November 30th, while the Liturgy Committee and its supporters decorate the church for Advent, I’ll lead a sing-a-long of Advent songs and hymns. So whether you sing or just listen, come prepare yourself for the holiday as we prepare our community…
