Lessons & Carols

Next Sunday, December 22nd at 7:00pm Our Lady of Peace Church, a parish in our Deanery, presents a Lessons & Carols service.

Their pastor, Fr. Patrick Boyle, O.F.M. says “This is our Christmas gift to our parish and neighbors. This is a perfect way to celebrate this time with a service that consists of a series of readings ('Lessons') taken from Holy Scripture, and music ('Carols') that narrate the Christmas story from the time of Adam and Eve to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. After each reading the audience is invited to participate by singing each of the songs and carols.”

With roots in ancient Christian vigils, the Archbishop of Canterbury created The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1880 for a Christmas Eve service (purportedly to keep the pubs empty that night.) The best-known version of this is broadcast annually from King's College, Cambridge. A Catholic podcast may be heard online on the “Lessons & Carols” page at USCCB.org.

Whether you watch it on television, listen to it online or better yet, attend in person, it's a great opportunity to pray and reflect as we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christmas.
