I Sing the Mighty POWER of God

Isaac Watts’ I Sing the Mighty Power of God was originally included in his children’s hymnal. For two centuries it’s been paired with the hymn tune ELLACOMBE. Named for a village in England, this tune was first published in 1784 as Ave Maria klärer in a German hymnal. So it’s appropriate at Immaculate Heart of Mary we sing a text originally written for children to a tune originally written as a Marian hymn as the theme song of this summer’s Vacation Bible School, Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power!

For the past two weeks we sang many songs that revealed God’s mighty power to us. My God Is So Great and learning about St. Juan Diego taught us how God has the power to provide everything we need since “there’s nothing my God cannot do!” A hug; a helping hand; kind words; St. Josephine Bakhita and the text of Psalm 23 in The King of Love My Shepherd Is all remind us of God’s power to comfort. Dancing the Power Shuffle and discovering St. Catherine of Siena makes us glad to know that when we’re sick or hurting, God has the “power to heal our broken hearts.” You’re Powerful and St. Jude helps us understand why it matters that God has the power to forgive and “make me whole again.” We also learned about St. Pope John Paul II; heaven; and sang about a special “home in glory land” in Do, Lord; realizing there’s only one thing that lasts forever: God has the power to love us forever!

And all with LIVE music! So whether you have a kid, or you're a teen or adult volunteer, join us next year when we leap from the top of Everest into Cave Quest: Following Jesus - The Light of the World! We’ll be gearing up for an over-the-top underground adventure to ground us all in the rock-solid foundation of God’s love that lights our way through life’s dark times!
