Happy Mother's Day!

As the unsung heroes, huggers, naggers, worry-warts and well-wishers they always are, moms also often play muse for song writers.  So if you want to present a mother with a gift of song, here are a few to honor her warm words and apply-pie smell…

Boyz II Men sing A Song for Mama on the Soul Food soundtrack and on their final album Evolution.  Kanye West depicts the mother-child bond in Hey Mama.  The Spice Girls acknowledge Mama has become their friend.  Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors reflects on the true story of how rich she felt growing up poor in the multi-colored coat her mother made for her from scrap pieces of cloth.  Jamie O'Neal pays tribute with She's Somebody's Hero.  Taylor Swift realizes she had The Best Day with her mom.  The Backstreet Boys consider their mom The Perfect Fan.  And Donny Osmond sings Mother of Mine.

Alternatively, Brad Paisley sings She’s Everything about the woman that means the most to him; the mother of his children.  Expectant mothers can be part of what’s to be as the Story Goes On from the musical Baby.  The lead singer of Lonestar describes his attempts to be Mr. Mom!  John Denver remembers bouncing up and down on Grandma’s Feather Bed.  Even though Minnie’s Boys flopped on Broadway, it did produce one standout tune, Mama, A Rainbow; recorded by both Steve Lawrence and Jim Neighbors and perfect for an older mother.  And if you’re missing your mother, listening to Celine Dion’s Goodbyes may ease your sense of loss.

And even though she might not appreciate being dragged to some karaoke bar to hear you belt out one of these songs for her, she will certainly act like she does; because that's what moms do…
