“The 86th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will again make history…” says executive producer Amy Kule, adding “As it has during turbulent times, we hope it serves as a beacon of hope and renewal for all Americans who will gather with friends and family to give thanks this season and begin to heal from the devastating aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.”

I’ve been participating as one of the parade’s 8,000 volunteers for fourteen years, and this year I’ll be “piloting” the soccer ball balloon.  But don’t worry if you forget to set your DVR before you come to Mass that morning, though NBC broadcasts it “live” to over 50 million viewers from 9:00 am – Noon, for the first time in television history it will be repeated that afternoon from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

This parade ushers in the holiday season, just as our 8th Annual Lighting of the Trees & Angels and Festive Classical Concert does.  And just like the parade introduces three new balloons this year; (The Elf on the Shelf®, Hello Kitty© aboard her airplane and Papa Smurf) we’re introducing something new.  As soon as the trees and angels are lit, all parishioners with any rock band experience are invited to perform outside on the East 4th Street patio, under a tented stage!  So dust off your guitars, basses, amps or keyboards and check your lyrics.  Whether you want to cover a holiday classic, or perform one of the more recent Christmas tunes, contact me soon to put you on the set list of performers!  This year, street spectators won’t just see our holiday spirit; they’ll enjoy refreshments and hear it too!

And to further anticipate the holiday season, on the morning of Saturday, December 1, while the Liturgy Committee and its supporters decorate the church for Advent, I’ll lead a sing-a-long of Advent songs and hymns.  So whether you sing or just listen, come prepare yourself for the holiday as we prepare our community…
