cuori BELLissimi!

Last year, a kid’s handbell choir called cuori BELLissimi! started playing regularly at 11:45 Mass. The 45-minute rehearsals for students in 2nd – 6th grades will resume on Wednesday, September 18th at 3:30 pm in the Good Shepherd, and will continue weekly on Wednesday afternoons.

Becoming a “ringer” develops team work; social interaction and self-esteem. It also provides training and self-discipline in motion skills. Musical ability is NOT the most important characteristic; a good ringer must want to be involved; have a willingness to learn and a commitment to attend regularly (a lack of responsibility toward attendance is a strong detriment to any group. Ask any coach.) It requires basic eye-hand coordination and a sense of a rhythmic beat.

There’s no fee, though in addition to the child’s name and grade I need to know a parent’s name and contact info, (phone and email) and if your child is NOT attending Faith Formation who will pick them up at 4:15. I also hope more adults will volunteer to alternate supervising rehearsals. Following each rehearsal, we’ll walk the children over to Brooklyn Prospect Charter School for their Faith Formation classes. Though I’ve conveniently scheduled it between school and religious education, it’s not a baby-sitting service.

As these students get older, however, they’re not going to want to continue playing the KidsPlay® set of little handbells we currently have. A set of chromatic handbells or handchimes can be very expensive, but we need to start thinking about investing in the future of our children. So if you know anyone who wants to start fundraising, or some way to obtain a donated set, please let me know!
