A Festive Concert of Guest Artists!

St. Francis Preperatory High School stretches back 152 years to a simple building on Baltic Street.  The school relocated  in 1952 to North Sixth Street, then again in 1974 to its present location in Fresh Meadows.  The Franciscan traditions of peace, love and respect for the individual and community create an environment filled with academic success, respect, integrity and joy.

In 1997 there were only fifteen students registered in a music course.  Now, the music department has grown to also include the String Orchestra, Honors Orchestra, Percussion/Band Ensemble, Concert Band and Concert Chorus.  It also features theory and music history courses, offering students an opportunity to broaden their cultural background and to prepare for college.

The two most advanced ensembles are the Chamber Choir & Orchestra.  The Chamber Choir performs a variety of traditional choral music, ranging from Medieval chants to contemporary jazz.  The Chamber Orchestra performs up to 20 times a year at both school and outside events, and were seen and heard by millions of television viewers when they had the privilege of performing for His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI at the Formal Diplomatic Departure Ceremony at JFK International Airport in 2008.

Last summer, both of these ensembles toured London, and are preparing to tour Italy with music and song this spring.  So as these 45 teens share their gift of music with us, we ask that audience members make a free-will donation to help sponsor their trip next June.

Come this Sunday, 12/12 at 4:30 for this festive concert, followed by the Annual Lighting of Trees and Angels.  Light refreshments will follow in the School Auditorium with an opportunity to meet our talented guests.  And to remind yourself of other musicians that have performed here, (or to inform me of any I may have missed) visit our new Guest Artists page!
