While he was in the Jesuit seminary, he began to experience the connection between music and communal worship. He learned firsthand how music can move a soul and bring one into the presence of God. At St. Louis University, he met John Foley, Bob Dufford, Roc O’Connor and Tim Manion. They played and sang for university liturgies; and wrote music that connected with people’s lives of faith. Their songs were enthusiastically and quickly spread by many who longed for scripture-based music written in a more contemporary, yet sacred, style. Known as “the St. Louis Jesuits,” they released nine collections and a 30-year anniversary collection in 2005. Some of his more notable songs with them include
City of God; Only This I Want; Sing a New Song; and of course,Here I Am, Lord

In addition to his Jesuit formation, Dan holds two master’s degrees; in theology and liturgy. He also did graduate studies in music composition, and received three honorary doctoral degrees for his contribution to the life of the church. He authored a book, Walking the Sacred Path – Spiritual Exercises for Today. He introduced a couple of these exercises to our parish when he led a day of music and prayer here in 2013.
